Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Medical Clinic Director, participate as an essential team member in the Medical Clinic. Assist providers and health care team in direct patient care according to established policies, procedures, and protocols including performing laboratory functions and assisting in direct patient care, medical procedures, patient education. Assist with administrative/clerical responsibilities as needed. All Nimkee staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive and greets patients, directing and assisting them to triage and examination areas.
  • Assess patient’s vital signs, history of present illness (HPI), review of systems, family history and medical needs due.  Record findings in E.H.R. and alert Primary Care Provider (PCP) to any abnormal findings.
  • Assist Medical Provider with paperwork and completion of paperwork; request outside reports from the ER, Urgent Care, and outside providers to ensure continuity of care and transition planning.
  • Collect blood (by venipuncture or finger stick), urine, stool and other specimens, throat cultures and sputum specimens as requested by provider and with adherence to established policies, procedures and precautions.
  • Complete laboratory requests and properly label laboratory specimens.
  • Complete Point of Care Testing Controls according to guidelines.
  • Perform Point of Care Testing and document results and put in charges for services in EHR.
  • Administer patient injections and immunizations; record in EHR and MICR, and maintain reminder schedule.
  • Perform wound care, bandaging, suture and staple removal as required.
  • Chaperone and assist providers with patient exams as required
  • Educate patients on how to use home equipment or how to perform self -injections
  • Educate patients on how to put on their removable braces
  • Place follow up calls to patients as needed
  • Assist in obtaining assistance for patient needs such as transportation, social services, etc.
  • Prepare exam rooms and gather instruments and supplies for any expected procedures.
  • Clean exam rooms after each encounter or as needed.
  • Clean and maintain medical instruments and autoclave per schedule or as needed.
  • Launder patient gowns per schedule or as needed
  • Enter laboratory and other results in the patient record.
  • Maintain appropriate forms and medical inventory in each exam room; order supplies as needed.
  • Track Cologuard testing to ensure compliance
  • Retrieve Quest Lab Results 2 times daily to integrate into EHR
  • Schedule appointments, verify appointments and make follow-up telephone calls.
  • Call patients with test results per provider direction.
  • Triage phone calls from patients to provider, schedule appropriate appointments as required
  • Prioritize and address all tasks within 24-48 business hours, no longer than 72 business hours
  • Request prior authorizations for referrals/testing/medications from insurance as required.
  • Chart Prep: Review next day’s schedule; retrieve, organize and prepare patient charts, and make other preparations to ensure we have everything needed for the visit.
  • Participate in Medical Clinic staff meetings, and other meetings and/or committees as assigned. Make appropriate suggestions on how to improve care, and remain actively involved in quality improvement efforts. 
  • Maintain current treatment modalities by participating in continuing education.
  • Provide patient/family education and follow up instructions regarding patient treatment.
  • Adhere to patient confidentiality and complies with clinic policies and federal regulations under the Privacy rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). 
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times.  Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and instruments.
  • Knowledge of OSHA guidelines for blood borne pathogens.
  • Knowledge of patient positioning and procedures for various examinations.
  • Knowledge of commonly used drugs and pharmacology terminology.
  • Knowledge of office functions, procedures, and policies.
  • Knowledge of sterilization procedures.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and EHR.
  • Skill in operating autoclave device.
  • Skill in treating patients with tact, courtesy, and respect.
  • Ability to obtain accurate vital signs and read lab result.
  • Ability to react quickly and make effective decisions in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with providing medical care and with computer equipment.
  • Required to stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

 

Work Environment:

  • Medical clinic. 
  • Exposure to bodily fluids such as blood and saliva and/or the potential for needle sticks and/or skin puncture. 
  • Latex may be used in the office, which can produce allergic reactions. 
  • Potential contact with chemicals and/or cleaning reagents utilized within the clinic.
  • Exposure to unpleasant odors, radiation, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous material and infectious disease. 
  • Situations occur where surgical masks, safety goggles, gloves and protective face shields are needed.  
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required. 
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Registered or Certified Medical Assistant License.
  • Minimum of one year experience working as a Medical Assistant in an outpatient Medical Clinic (Family Medicine Preferred)
  • Must be knowledgeable in CPT and ICD 10 codes and medical terminology
  • Knowledge of handling telephone triage calls and scheduling appointments
  • Ability to work through busy and stressful situations
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with patients and all members of the health care team and have good computer skills.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

 

License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program with certification as a Registered/Certified Medical Assistant.
  • Ability to obtain HIPAA Certification, Blood Borne Pathogens Certification, BLS Certification and Safety Training within thirty days of hire.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
