Job Description


Directs and oversees the activities of the engine room regarding the mechanical operations, repair and maintenance functions for the vessel by performing the following duties personally:

Essential Functions

  1. Directs and oversees the functionality and safety of the vessel’s engines, boilers, deck machinery, electrical, hydraulic, refrigeration and sanitary systems in accordance with Trident policy and local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  2. Directs capital projects (e.g. drydocking, installation and repair projects), including the scheduling, budgeting and compliance with license, permit and other applicable codes and regulations.
  3. Oversees and establishes the performance and operation standards for all vessel systems.  Resolves problems using solutions that involve appropriate techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  4. Must be able to give specific directions in the case of an emergency.  Can include launching a raft, donning an immersion suit or life perserver, assist in a response to fire or flooding.
  5. Directs and oversees required documentation for energy management, conservations and preventitive maintenance programs.
  6. Analyzes human resource needs to assist with short and long term projects.
  7. Confers with Captain and management to determine engineering feasibility and cost effectiveness of present or future projects.
  8. Oversees the design and implementation of training to ensure that all vessel engineering start are properly trained, qualified and in compliance with regulatory training and/or regulatory certification requirements.  
  9. Must be able to forecast operating costs of department and assists in  preparation of budget requests.
  10. Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs,  and/or inter-departmental relations.
  11. Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.

Additional Responsibilities

Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.




Extensive seafood of related industry experience preferred.  Four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Not required


  1. 2 years as engineer of a tender vessel in the fishery being applied for.
  2. 3 years as a deckhand on a similar sized vessel.
  3. Basic fire fighting skills.
  4. Current First Aid and CPR cards.
  5. Clean vessel safety record.
  6. Familiarity with pollution abatement procedures.
  7. Familiarity with state and federal regulations that apply to the vessel being applied for.

Special Training/Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.  To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software.

Work Environment:   

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands:  

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to climb or balance.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.  The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and peripheral vision.

Mental Activities:     

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to Read, speak, write and understand English and use customer service skills.  The employee is frequently required to utilize interpersonal, teamwork, decision making skills, creativity, independent judgment, discretion, problem analysis, and supervision skills.
