REFRIGERATION TECHNICIAN - DAILY

Repairs and maintains refrigeration units and mechanical equipment aboard vessel by performing the following duties:

Essential Functions:

  1. Observes and tests system operation using gauges and instruments.
  2. Adjust valves according to specifications and charges system with proper type of refrigerant by pumping the specified gas or fluid into system.
  3. Tests lines, components, and connections for leaks.
  4. Dismantles malfunctioning systems and test components, using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment.
  5. Adjusts or replaces worn or defective mechanisms and parts, and reassemble repaired systems.
  6. Brazes or solders parts to repair defective joints and leaks.
  7. Performs mechanical overhauls and refrigerant reclaiming.
  8. Installs expansion and control valves, using acetylene torchers and wrenches.
  9. Installs wiring to connect components to an electric power source.
  10. Keeps record of repairs and replacements made and causes of malfunctions.
  11. Initiates purchase orders for parts.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.

Education:

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

Minimum 2 years’ experience using general refrigeration competencies, including but not limited to ammonia and/or Freon systems repair.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Current R.E.T.A. or Refrigeration Certification preferred; if not currently certified, must be able to do so within one year.

Special Training/Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.  To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts.  The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.  The employee must be able to climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs or vertical ladders both inside or outside in all weather conditions.  The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception.

Must be capable of boarding and departing (exiting) a vessel without assistance by moving up or climbing a gangplank , the stern ramp of  a vessel and/or a vertical ladder.  Must be capable of boarding/departing the vessel by being lifted in a crane or manlift.  May also enter and exit a skiff from a dock, plane, or  a boat unassisted.  Must meet at designated locations to receive instructions and place on a life jacket and an immersion suit without assistance in one minute or less.  Must also move quickly without assistance to any designated life boat station.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to understand English, and utilize teamwork skills.  The employee is frequently required to speak English, and use decision making skills. The employee is occasionally required to use interpersonal, customer service, mentoring, problem analysis, training and supervision skills.  The employee will be occasionally required to read and write English, perform basic math, use exercise independent judgment, and use discretion.
