This position is full-time, nonexempt, classified and covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Hours are 7:00 am - 4:00 pm; Monday – Friday;  overtime as required

Under the direction of the Service Center Manager, the Assistant Service Manager is responsible for ordering, receiving and maintaining inventory of parts and equipment at the service center.  The Assistant Service Manager assesses vehicle repairs, schedules and assigns service work and performs routine maintenance to assist with repairs.  This position also assists the Service Center Manager as required.


  • Orders, receives and maintains inventory of parts and equipment at the service center and is responsible for charging parts back to departments to ensure inventory control.
  • Researches and negotiates with vendors for best pricing on parts and equipment.
  • Assesses and schedules vehicle repairs and maintenance, creating work orders and assigning tasks for staff to complete.
  • Maintains a safe working environment by promoting safety procedures and ensuring safety standards are met by staff.
  • Serves as acting supervisor in the absence of the Service Center Manager.
  • Assists the Service Center Manager with day-to-day operations and maintenance of the service center.
  • Assists with vehicle repairs, including fabrication and installation of special equipment, when needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.


  • Specialized training beyond high school in automotive repair and maintenance with at least three years’ automotive repair and diagnostics experience
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License to move, transport and test vehicles
  • Ability to multi-task and attention to detail to maintain inventory control
  • Willingness to participate, sometimes outside of normal work hours, in ongoing training
  • Ability to direct all operations ensuring all established maintenance, repair and safety standards are met
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment, small hand and power tools, and instruments used in the repair and maintenance of equipment


The Assistant Service Manager performs duties in a standard garage environment and may be exposed to excessive noise, grease, dirt and fumes. Frequent lifting of vehicle components and equipment of moderate to heavy weight, bending, pushing/pulling, reaching over head and kneeling exists. The Service Station Manager may perform work in awkward and/or cramped positions and performs some functions in stooping or crouched positions. Safety precautions must be observed at all times to ensure safety of self and others.
