Pay Range:

Level I: $20.40/hourly -$22.20/hourly

Level II: $22.95/hourly- $24.98/hourly

Purpose of Job

 

Drives trucks, picks up refuse, operates equipment and performs manual work functions associated with collecting residential, multi-residential and non-residential refuse, recyclables, and other refuse as assigned. 

Essential Job Duties 

 

A.  Operates equipment

  • Operates a variety of equipment and machinery used in department projects and activities, which may include a pickup truck, non-CDL rear loader, container delivery truck, trash truck, weedeater, blower, chain saw, shovel, rake, pitchfork, broom, mechanic’s tools, radio communication equipment, forklift, pesticide and weed killer sprayer, trimmers, pressure washer, air compressor knuckleboom, side loader, front-end loader, rear loader, mini-packer, split rear loader or other type of machinery.
  • Performs pre and post trip inspections on trucks/equipment checking fluids, air pressure, lights, etc.; completes required daily checklist
  • Performs front-line maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fuel levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning behind the pack panel on a daily basis, cleaning building and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain safety and efficiency; reports faulty equipment.
  • Completes assigned route daily to pick up and transport solid waste and recyclable materials with delivery to transfer station, recycling center, compost site, landfill or other appropriate disposal facility/location.
  • Reports potential route hazards, to include low hanging lines and tree limbs, parked cars and other obstacles.
  • Assists with resolution of customer requests and complaints; communicates and educates customers regarding Sanitation and Environmental Services rules, fees and provided services.
  • Manually picks up and transports refuse and recyclable materials for proper disposal which may include, walking streets, riding on the back of a truck, or working at transfer station to unload materials from collection trucks/equipment.
  • May pick up and dispose of dead animals
  • May set safety cones and barricades, flag traffic and act as a spotter for drivers.
  • May be required to climb ladder on back of truck to clear debris and waste from the top of collection truck/equipment
  • Performs daily assigned work in compliance with applicable city, county, state and federal codes and laws
  • Receives, interprets and completes form, reports, work orders, service requests, maps, routes and other documents required to meet daily route assignment.
  • Maintains responsibility for completing assigned work in the safest manner possible, in addition to wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as required

B.  General maintenance and upkeep

  • Performs various manual tasks associated with department projects and activities, which may include digging holes/trenches, shoveling materials, loading/unloading materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, and picking up debris/litter. Performs routine upkeep of work facility, which may include cleaning restrooms, cleaning office, sweeping, mopping, and stocking materials.
  • Delivers, repairs, and replaces solid waste containers for customers; completing required paperwork and delivering payments to Office Manager.

  • Maintains Department of Sanitation and Environmental Services grounds by mowing, weed eating, trimming hedges and other tasks associated with lawn and grounds maintenance.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a High School Diploma or GED; or one to three years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Required Certifications/Licenses:

CDL Class A or B
