Job Description


Linden House at 1250 Branchlands Drive in Charlottesville, VA  is an Assisted Living Community providing central dining services for our residents in a restaurant-like setting.  The Cook will cook and prepare meals and provide supervision to dietary staff on their scheduled shift.    Responsibilities include:

Using established and approved cooking methods, cooks food and designated alternatives in accordance with approved menus, and recipes.  Cooking methods include baking, roasting, frying, steaming as appropriate.   

Prepares cold food such as salads and desserts.

Cooks, prepares, and serves quantities of food such that waste and leftovers are minimal.  Uses leftover food appropriately and safely.

When scheduled for morning shift, opens kitchen according to established and approved procedures. 

When scheduled for late shift, closes kitchen according to established and approved procedures. 

Follows menus and recipes as approved and only makes changes with the consent of the Food Service Director.

Prepares food for special events such as in-house catered meetings, resident functions, holiday parties, celebrations, and other non-routine events that include food.  Included may be cooking or serving special “on-demand” food items in public at a carving station, omelet station, etc.  

Observes all infection control standards including the wearing of hair nets, gloves, aprons, etc. and washes hands frequently.


  • 1 year of professional institutional cooking experience preferred            
  • Strong working knowledge of using recipes
  • Sanitation knowledge and certificate of training or the ability to obtain   
  • Customer service skills / hospitality approach
  • Demonstrates verbal and written communication skills (in the English language) sufficient to perform the principle duties and responsibilities outlined in this job description
