SUMMARY

Provides support and cares for employees who are ill and/or injured. Transports and transfers patients and assesses the extent of an illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to follow.

Essential Functions

  1. Provides competent, compassionate, and timely medical treatment to crew and employees of the vessel.
  2. Evaluates, assesses and treats all reported medical illnesses and injuries.
  3. Responds to any and all medical emergencies.
  4. Reports all occupational illnesses and injuries to the corporate claims representative, records and submits appropriate claims and insurance forms.
  5. Administers over the counter medicines as needed.
  6. Performs DOT urine drug screen collections in accordance with CFR Part 40 procedures for routine random screenings and in association with all reported injuries/accidents.
  7. Performs non DOT periodic drug tests for the company drug testing program and administers alcohol tests.
  8. Maintains daily logs and reports for all patients seen and for all injuries.
  9. Records and archives all records and documentation in accordance with HIPPA rules.
  10. Reports, maintains and records all work related illnesses and injuries on appropriate OSHA forms.
  11. Acts as the medical liaison between the patient and corporate entities regarding all ship board medical problems.
  12. Maintains an adequate supply of consumable medicines and treatment supplies. Performs inventory of these supplies and orders supplies to keep appropriate levels of medicines and supplies on board the vessel.
  13. Manages the ship store, orders provisions and maintains inventory as well as maintains accounts and records for all crew using this service.
  14. Maintains a clean, healthy, well –organized work environment that presents a professional medical appearance.

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.
  2. May assist in loading and unloading operations at the start and end of all trips
  3. Acquire knowledge of Trident’s Environmental and Safety Policies by completing required training programs and performing designated work activities in accordance with training and procedures/work instructions.
  4. Notify designated personnel of any environmental and safety incidents, or risks not previously documented, in accordance with Environmental Awareness and or Safety training.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Nationally registered paramedic with current ACLS Certification and/or medical equivalent i.e. RN/LPN – trauma experience with current ACLS.

Experience:

Five years experience.

Special Training/Skills:    Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.  To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software.

Must be capable of boarding and departing (exiting) a vessel without assistance by moving up or climbing a gangplank , the stern ramp of  a vessel and/or a vertical ladder. Must be capable of boarding/departing the vessel by being lifted in a crane or manlift. May also enter and exit a skiff from a dock, plane, or a boat unassisted. Must meet at designated locations to receive instructions and place on a life jacket and an immersion suit without assistance in one minute or less. Must also move quickly without assistance to any designated life boat station.

Work Environment:    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands:    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must be able to climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs or vertical ladders both inside or outside in all weather conditions. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception.  May be required to distinguish shades of color to identify abnormalities and/or defects in food products.

Mental Activities:    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use teamwork skills.  The employee will occasionally use interpersonal and customer service skills.  The employee will occasionally perform basic math and read, speak and write English.  The employee will frequently need to understand English.
