Translator

Description of position

The position involves translating company documents (marketing, technical, administrative and other) from English to French mostly, with the help of translation software (Logiterm). A large component of this position involves comparative revision.

Daily tasks and responsibilities

  • Translate, from English to French in many different types of file formats, including .xml and .html, frequently with the use of translation software (Logiterm)
  • Add to the translation department’s terminology bank
  • Revise and proofread different types of files with and without software and tools; frequent post editing work involved
  • Occasionally write in French
  • Deliver translations (electronic or hard copy)
  • Make revision changes requested by coworkers, clients and management
  • Consult various references, data banks and colleagues 
  • Actively participate in meetings and work on both personal and team projects
  • Offer terminology, grammar and spelling advice to internal clients as needed 
  • Obtain required information from internal clients (context, objectives, deadlines) 
  • Work on numerous projects while meeting varying deadlines
  • Work on other tasks related to the position as requested by manager

 

Typical schedule

  • Entitled to work from home 2 days per week after the probation period (90days).
  • * Typical shifts and days off will be discussed at the time of the interview, but could change as per needs of the business.

Qualifications 

Education/Training:

  • University degree or diploma or certificate in translation (English to French), with a combination of experience and/or studies is required. 

Permits/Licenses/Certifications:

  • Translation software training or equivalent, is required.
  • Proven area of specialization, is preferred.
  • Language association membership, is preferred.
  • Certification with one of the provincial professional translator association’s members of the CTTIC, is preferred

Experience:

  • Translation experience in a structured environment (including practicums), is preferred.
  • Experience working in an intranet or Web environment, is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Excellent knowledge of source and target languages (oral and written) is required. 
  • Strong technical abilities: extensive experience using translation software, proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe (PDF), and Google Docs’s skills, are required.
  • Strong technical abilities: Logiterm and Flow Fit, is preferred. 
  • Strong attention to detail, discretion, and judgment and project ownership. 
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities while meeting deadlines in a busy environment.
  • Tactful and persuasive communication skills. Energetic; positive attitude; team player. 
  • Experience in technical translation, especially in the fields of travel, accounting or retail, is preferred.

Other:

  • Candidate must successfully pass a written translation test. Other education or training in an area related to retail, is preferred.
