USMS – Court Security Officer (CSO-TS)

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Contract Manager, this position supports the Security of the US Judicial complex, and the safety of the judicial family and the general public utilizing the US Courts. The Court Security Officer (CSO) will observe and report activities and incidents at assigned locations, providing for the security and safety of client property, visitors, and personnel. The officer preserves order and may act to enforce regulations and directives for the site pertaining to personnel, visitors, and premises.

Additionally, the CSO is responsible for ensuring the safety of federal courts and court employees against unauthorized, illegal and potentially life-threatening activities. At a minimum, CSOs are required to perform the following functions: Entrance Control, Roving Patrol, Stationary Patrol Assignments, Escort Duties, Garage Parking and Pedestrian Control, Law and Order, Reports and Records, Court Attendance, Preserve Order, Lost and Found

Minimum Qualifications at Entry:  Additional qualifications may be specified and receive preference, depending upon the nature of the position.

Basic Qualifications

  • US Citizenship preferred
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have ability to obtain government clearance.  This assignment requires a Top-Secret government clearance.

Education | Experience

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least three (3) calendar years of verifiable experience as a certified law enforcement officer or its military equivalency; all three years must have occurred within the last seven years.  The experience must have included general arrest authority. 
  • Must have completed or graduated from certified Federal, state, county, local or military law enforcement training academy and able to provide certification as proof.

Background Prerequisites

Must undergo and meet company standards for background and reference checks (for this assignment the background check goes back 10 years), controlled substance testing, may need to meet Physical examination requirements per assignment and behavioral selection survey, in addition to any mandatory licensing requirements.

Competencies (as demonstrated through experience, training, and/or testing):

  • Must be able to meet and continue to meet any applicable state, county and municipal licensing requirements.
  • Must be able to meet and continue to meet requirements for specific skills, certifications or authorizations specified for the assigned site.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form and the ability to write routine correspondence, including logs and reports.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group settings
  • Ability to analyze and produce course of action reporting and escalate issues to management in typical and crisis situations.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a small group to resolve urgent issues, process orientated with high attention to detail, and triage a problem quickly providing precise/clear information while working under minimum supervision.
  • Ability to be an effective team member; to maintain professional composure when dealing with unusual circumstances; to adapt to changes in the external environment and organization and possess good organizational skills.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service.  Courteous telephone manner: good interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively at various social levels and across diverse cultures.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.

WORKING CONDITIONS: With or without reasonable accommodation, requires the physical and mental capacity to perform effectively all essential functions.  In addition to other demands, the demands of the job include:

  • Work is performed inside and outside the property with exposure to inclement weather and unpredictable crisis situations.
  • Shift work required.
  • Ability to remain on post up to four (4) consecutive hours without eating, drinking, or relieving bladder/bowels. 
  • Ability to see, hear, and smell in order to respond to alarms and detect emergency situations.

Certain state's posting requirements ask for additional detail.  Depending on geography, site assignment and / or experience: 

  • Wage range for this position is $25.79-37.85 with a Health and Welfare benefit range from $4.50-$5.05 where applicable.             
  • Additional compensation of $1.00 - $3.00 may be available at sites requiring a Secret or Top Secret clearance.                                   
  • Some site assignments may include a shift differential of an additional 3%-6% per hour.                                                          
  • The paid leave for full time employees is from 80-240 hours / year based on longevity in the position, and sick leave is a minimum of 56 hours per year for a full-time employee
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, 401k (if paid via Health and Welfare benefit, there is no separate company contribution)
