DOCK WORKER-YARD

Job Summary: Ties vessels to moorings, loads, unloads, and moves materials on and off vessels and/or from dock to storage site by performing the following duties:

Essential Functions:

  1. Ties/unties incoming/departing vessels to moorings.
  2. Hook up shore power, phone lines and install/adjust/remove gangway as needed.
  3. Deploys/retracts oil boom around vessels as needed.
  4. Monitors tidal fluctuation and makes or reports the need to make necessary line adjustments accordingly.
  5. Reads work order or email or follows oral instructions from Dock Manager .
  6. Opens containers and inspects and sorts cargo, if applicable, before loading and unloading.
  7. Loads and unloads materials or garbage onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves by hand and keeps dock free of debris (cardboard, pallets and garbage).
  8. Loads and unloads ship cargo, using winches and other hoisting devices. Secures lifting attachments to materials and conveys load to destination or signals crane or hoisting operators to move load to destination.
  9. Packs materials onto flatbeds or into containers  and installs strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
  10. Operates safely equipment within its limitations.
  11. Operates forklifts and other heavy equipment by moving levers and pressing pedals
  12. Lubricates truck, recharges/changes batteries, fills fuel tank, or replaces liquefied gas tank.
  13. Keeps piers free of debris not part of a specific project.
  14. Inspects, notes and reports damage to pier to manager for repair.
  15. Maintains skiff and float dock.
  16. Inspects camel logs along pier, in water, and reports damage to manager. 
  17. Inspects/cleans oil boom as needed.
  18. Places, removes and dumps dumpsters and operates trash compactor.
  19. Handles scrap and recycle materials per Dock Manager’s instructions.
  20. Inspects crane rail and baloney track for obstructions when crane is in use.
  21. Maintains good housekeeping in all work areas.
  22. Moves product and other materials to and from storage and production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, ships, and containers, by hand or using trucks, tractors, and other equipment.
  23. Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases, equipment, pallets, or other containers.
  24. Stacks or assembles materials into bundles or on pallets and bands bundles/pallets together.
  25. Assembles product containers and crates, using hand tools and precut lumber.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Training/Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Work Environment:    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands:    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception.

Mental Activities:      While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use teamwork skills.  The employee will occasionally use interpersonal and customer service skills.
