Performs cleaning tasks and operates various types of cleaning equipment to care for and maintain assigned buildings and related facilities; prepares and maintains stock records of janitorial supplies; and replenishes supplies as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

1. Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, empty trash and clean classrooms, restrooms, lobby, hallway, stairwells, downstairs dining area, first floor, second floor, basement, stock and storage rooms according to cleaning schedule.

2. Check and maintain supplies in restrooms.

3. Organize and maintain janitorial supplies required in buildings.

4. Maintain clean outside walkways, driveways and yards.

5. Maintain floors such as waxing and sanding on a scheduled basis.

6. Help staff set up for meetings, move tables and chairs and equipment.

7. Assist in the minor repairs of buildings.  Contact vendors for repairs.  

8. Pick-up and deliver supplies, mail, etc.

9. During inclement weather, keep building and outside areas safe.

10. Report to management all pilferage, damage to buildings and goods, safety violations and need for major repairs or additions.

11.  Summer Tasks.  The summer break provides an opportunity to deep clean the Head Start Center.  The Custodial Summer Task List, which is an attachment part and parcel to this job description, serves to provide, but is not limited to, specific deep cleaning summer tasks.  While many of these tasks are also performed during the regular school year, it is expected that a more thorough cleaning can be made and maintained during the summer break.  It is the responsibility of the custodian, with supervisory review of the Center Coordinator, to ensure deep cleaning is occurring during the summer.

12. Perform other related work, such as painting, or minor repair, as assigned.

Minimum Requirements


High School Diploma or equivalent skills required such as reading cleaning supplies labels, instructions.  A combination of education and experience commensurate with the job description. Minimum one year experience in janitorial activities. Must have a valid South Carolina Driver’s License and obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 90 days of employment.
