Sanitation Clerk

Description of position

Responsible for the daily cleaning of the employee welfare areas, hallways, offices, and restrooms. Ensuring the plant maintains a hygienic and tidy environment.

Daily tasks and responsibilities

  • Follows the daily cleaning schedule and ensures all cleaning tasks are carried out for the following areas: employee welfare areas (including the lunchroom, entrance hall way, locker area, offices, restrooms, and employee vestibule); plant areas (compactor room, open area floors); and the outside plant perimeter.
  • Documents all cleaning activities performed on a daily basis ensuring the defined frequency is adhered to. Ensures documentation is properly organized and filed.
  • Takes ownership of the areas to be cleaned and ensures cleaning is completed to the highest standard, in a timely manner.
  • Works with the Sanitation Manager / Assistant Commissary Manager QA to ensure that adjustments are made to the daily cleaning schedule in order to support the plant hygiene program.
  • Proactively performs all tasks in a food-safe manner by:
  • i) Reporting to the Assistant Commissary Manager any potential problems, hazards, and broken or damaged equipment;

    ii) Highlighting improvements in cleaning practices and / or tools to the Sanitation Manager or Assistant Commissary Manager.

  • Works in a safe manner by ensuring all Commissary safety rules are followed when working around equipment / with equipment (floor scrubbers), and when using cleaning products.
  • Responsible for the general upkeep of the building and reacts to unforeseen cleaning issues not defined on the daily cleaning schedule.
  • Assists in other areas of the department as needed.

Assists in other areas of the Commissary as necessary.

Qualifications (Costco-specific or industry-specific skills that candidates must possess)

  • Education/Training: High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Permits/Licenses/Certifications: Costco Food Safety Certification – Level 1 required.
  • Experience: 
    • Relevant experience of janitorial work within a food plant is preferred (where maintaining heightened cleanliness levels is essential).
    • Experience of working in a Hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) certified environment, knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)’s and food safety rules / regulations are preferred.
  • Knowledge/Skills: 
    • Understanding of the fundamentals of cleaning and sanitation preferred.
