R. J. Corman Railroad Company has a need for a Bridge Inspector based out of Lexington, KY and travelling frequently across our network of short line railroads. This individual is responsible for inspecting railroad bridges and structures to ensure conformity with safety regulations, building codes, and railroad engineering specifications.

Responsibilities include:  

  • Inspects railroad bridges and other structures to detect damage or wear and to ensure structures conform to safety regulations, building codes, and railroad engineering specifications.
  • Verifies alignment of bridge with road track, using levels and similar gauging instruments.
  • Measures clearance between bridges and roads to ensure sufficient clearance for passage of vehicles, in accordance with local building codes and specifications.
  • Inspects piles, posts, and timbers to determine if decayed, split, or crooked.
  • Inspects bolts and rivets at joints of floor beams, stringers, and panel points to ensure they are securely fastened.
  • Inspects steel girders to detect buckling.
  • Inspects drainage systems to detect obstructions
  • Prepares reports of findings, noting location and type of structure, defect, and extent of damage.
  • Responsible for creating and following schedule of inspections
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements


Job Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of railroad track maintenance experience, bridge experience preferred
  • Experience with FRA inspection regulations
  • Ability to pass Railroad safety test and training.
  • Ability to communicate well with co-workers, customers, and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate power tools.
  • Strong time-management skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to perform physical strenuous work 
  • Able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch 
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs 
  • Requires occasional use of 30 lb claw bar to remove spikes, requiring application of 50 lbs of force
  • Requires occasional use of 10 lb sledge hammer to drive spikes, requiring application of 75 lbs of force
  • Able to walk, climb, and maintain balance on equipment, stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, rails and ballast in a safe manner
  • Able to navigate into confined spaces if necessary   

Environmental Conditions: Work is performed outside in varying types of environmental conditions.

Major or Unusual Problems:  Travel required. Must be able to work away from home including long hours & weekends as necessary.

Major or Unusual Problems: Must carry out responsibilities in a fast-paced outside RR / construction environment.  Requires efficient development and performance of processes; and requires ability to multi-task in a time sensitive environment. High visibility position requires professional demeanor in interactions with Supervisors, employees, contractors and customers.
