Would you like to share your passion for volunteerism?  Would you like to use your leadership and development skills to provide a great volunteer experience at the YMCA?  As the volunteer experience specialist, you will shape the volunteer experience by developing a volunteer engagement plan to include, but not limited to, volunteer recruitment, processing, orientation, development, and appreciation. You will ensure that volunteers are empowered in their roles and that they discover meaningful work through the YMCA.

As a part time employee, you will receive paid sick leave and an individual membership to the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties.

In this position you will be able to use your skills for:

Recruit, Engage, and Develop Volunteers:

  • Develop, implement, sustain and evaluate an association-wide plan for volunteer engagement, including program, policy, fundraising, special event, administrative, community and corporate volunteers.
  • Lead efforts in recruitment, processing, orientation, development, evaluation, and retention of volunteers.
  • Build relationships and invite potential volunteers with varying skills and from diverse backgrounds and experiences to reflect the community served by the Y and bring valuable perspectives.
  • Actively promote volunteer opportunities and recruit for special events.
  • Assist staff in identifying productive and meaningful volunteer roles within their departments.
  • Assist in creating, updating and keeping current volunteer service descriptions.
  • Ensure materials/communications have consistent messaging regarding the Y’s mission and cause, volunteer expectations, and the value of volunteering time and talent to the community through the Y.
  • Ensure that each staff member responsible for volunteers is knowledgeable about volunteer processes and policies and is supportive in their interactions with volunteers.
  • Process and run all criminal background checks and reference checks on volunteer applications.
  • Ensure volunteers successfully complete all steps of the onboarding process prior to placement and are compliant with all training expectations.
  • Ensure compliance with Association requirements and standards, as well as alignment with applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Ensure volunteers’ needs are met, including meaningful and timely placement, initial connection/engagement, ongoing support/communication, appreciation, and uniforms.
  • Maintain accurate records of all volunteers in volunteer management system.
  • Working with staff supervisors and volunteers, ensure accurate records of service hours.
  • Effectively participate in and/or lead virtual and in-person meetings and trainings to include, but not limited to, Teams and Zoom.
  • Support engagement and outreach through attendance at community or virtual events, including volunteer and employment fairs.

Minimum Requirements


Are you a good fit?

  • You have three years volunteer engagement, event planning, fund development, or comparable experience.
  • You have the ability to build relationships with the community, members, staff, and volunteers in all roles and at all levels.
  • You are committed to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • You have project management skills, attention to detail, and experience with records management.
  • You are proficient with computers, including practical application of MS Office suite, especially Excel and Teams.
  • You have access to reliable internet connectivity with adequate connection speeds.
  • You have experience with general office equipment and knowledge of general office procedures.
  • You are able to multi-task, problem-solve and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • You are able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day, and other online and in-person/virtual training as required.
