Director of Safety

Job Overview

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Safety is responsible for directing and leading the development of company wide risk control business plans and strategies consistent with company objectives. Strategies will focus on reducing the frequency and severity of associate and customer injuries and illnesses, compliance with governmental regulatory agencies, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT requirements, and the protection of the Company's assets. This role is also responsible for the process of identifying, measuring, and managing related hazard risks, developing reports and plans, and analyzing safety problems, and defining and/or overseeing the implementation of the risk solutions that help optimize operations. The Director of Safety leads a team of Safety Managers to execute programs that emphasize building an organizational safety culture, behavioral-based safety for associates, and continuous improvement. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and serve as the primary safety expert for the Company

  • Develop company wide risk control programs by collaborating with cross-functional departments and risk consultants as needed. Implement and manage programs to favorably impact the frequency and severity of associate and customer claims

  • Establish and build safety metrics, provide leadership around accurate reporting and metrics, support business safety initiatives, and justify the allocation of appropriate resources to areas where the safety risk is highest

  • Ensure all incident reporting and investigation processes identify root causes and prevent recurrence

  • Influence change within the department, within the Company, and among external business partners to increase a culture of safety

  • Build a strong organizational safety culture and apply behavioral risk concepts to risk control programs and practices

  • Maintain regular communication with corporate office leadership and associates, Asset Protection, Distribution Center and field operations teams on safety initiatives, including regular training at regional and district meetings

  • Oversee and manage a company wide hazardous waste program

  • Identify and analyze organizational risks utilizing the Risk Management process. Develop and implement programs to mitigate these risks and achieve desired results

  • Analyze large amounts of claims and business data from disparate data sources to determine root cause of drivers of frequency and cost of claims. Utilize analytical skills to interpret data and effective communications skills to report on claim trends and related risk controls to company leadership and external business partners

  • Research, understand, interpret, and apply applicable laws to manage and effectively administer multi-state compliance programs, including without limitation OSHA, EPA, and DOT requirements

  • Analyze and propose updates as needed for company policy, procedures, and practices to ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory safety and environmental health requirements

  • Develop and distribute effective and actionable loss prevention reports for senior and field leadership

  • Manage fire protection programs and initiatives for the Company-owned locations

  • Support other risk management special initiatives as assigned

  • Manage the Safety team performance, write performance reviews and provide coaching and feedback. As needed, delegate work and follow up with team members to confirm timely completion of tasks

  • Assist with hiring new team members, training new team members and acting as a mentor to coach and develop new teammates

Requirements

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety/environmental/ergonomics or related field required 

  • 10 or more years of professional experience establishing, leading, and improving safety and/or environmental programs in retail organizations required

  • 5 or more years of experience leading/building teams required

  • Industry knowledge including OSHA, EPA, NFPA, FM Global fire protection standards, product recall and other regulatory standards applicable to a retail operation required

  • Certified Safety Professional or EHS designation preferred

  • Expertise in Hazardous Waste laws preferred

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and a clean driving record

  • Proficient in Google platform (i.e. sites, slides, drives, docs, sheets)

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work primarily in a climate controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard
    potential. Sedentary, and frequent near vision use for reading and computer use.

  • Periodic travel including overnight and weekend assignments may be required.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, or electrical components. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
