JOB SUMMARY

The Environmental Health Specialist performs a full range of complex environmental compliance inspections over the planning, location, construction, operation, and maintenance of subsurface sewage disposal systems.  Additionally, the incumbent issues permits for the installation of surface sewage disposal systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:     

  • Performs environmental compliance monitoring and inspections;
  • Enforces established environmental standards, laws, rules, regulations, and administrative policies and procedures. All environmental standards, laws, rules, regulations, and administrative policies and procedures will be in compliance with the State of Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation;
  • Reviews and evaluates information acquired by site inspections and other informative sources used for determining minimum environmental compliance of established standards;
  • Investigates complaints, develops corrective recommendations for identified problems and initiates legal action to enforce compliance of established standards;
  • Provides consultative, technical, or educational services to industry, municipalities, counties, individuals, or groups in the necessity and methodology of enhancing environmental health standards, practices, and safety;
  • Performs environmental monitoring work including sampling and evaluation of pollutants to determine environmental standards compliance;
  • Maintains records and prepares operating records and reports;
  • Environmental Specialists may also be required to work in conjunction with a variety of agencies specializing in air pollution, water pollution, water supply, superfund, solid waste management, radiological health, of Department of Energy Oversight;
  • Performs other miscellaneous job duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geology or other acceptable field;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and 
  • Valid driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS,  AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of departmental practices and systems;
  • Skilled in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems;
  • Skilled in using computers for data entry;
  • Skilled in using computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes;
  • Skilled in using highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD;
  • Ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools;
  • Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers;
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and an orientation towards customer service;
  • Ability to organize, and communicate effectively;
  • Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others; and
  • Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member;
