This position is full time, nonexempt, classified and covered under The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.
Hours are 7:00 am – 3:00 pm with the ability to work nights, weekends and the ability to be on-call 24/7
Under the direction of the Plant Facilities Manager, the Operating Engineer is responsible for monitoring, maintaining and repairing the Building Automation System (BAS), HVAC, plumbing, fire systems, ice making systems, snow removal and general maintenance of the complex.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for monitoring a variety of computer control systems, gauges, meters to ensure proper functioning of building control systems, and adjusting equipment to maintain optimal room temperatures, air and water pressures.
- Maintains boilers, chillers, air handlers, air compressors, ice making equipment, HVAC controllers, fire systems, plumbing systems and any other related computer-controlled diagnostic equipment through repairs, preventative maintenance, periodic cleanings and overhauls.
- Monitors and maintains fire safety alarm and sprinkler systems, including repairing and updating alarm systems, with additional smoke detectors, audio-visual, sprinkler systems, fire hoses, fire extinguishers, tampers and flow switches. Assists with weekly, monthly and yearly insurance inspections. Training others on emergency response to alarm system and fire suppression systems.
- Maintains required reports for state and local fire inspection authorities. Assists with plumbing, carpentry, masonry and equipment.
- Maintains inventory of repaired parts, filters and chemicals.
- Assists with projects dealing with updating equipment and building control systems.
- Assists with snow removal during the winter months.
- Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED or certification program of comparable length; Associate’s Degree preferred
- Three years’ experience in Building Automation Controls and Computer Systems
- HVAC Certification preferred
- Life Safety Certifiation preferred
- Working knowledge of uniform plumbing, mechanical, and fire codes
- Knowledge of building control systems and related software. Preferably in the Talon System.
- Ability to adapt to new changes and technologies in equipment and software
- Ability to maintain routine inventory and maintenance records
- Knowledge of fire alarm systems and related hardware
- Ability to read blueprints and a thorough knowledge of uniform plumbing and mechanical codes
- Universal Refrigeration certification (must be able to obtain within one year of hire)
- Experience with carpentry, masonry and plumbing
- Ability to use Microsoft Office and other job-related computer software programs including security cameras and servers, computerized HVAC control systems, lighting control systems, sound systems, fire systems, and security access control system
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Operating Engineer works in an arena facility requiring frequent walking, some sitting and standing and frequent lifting up to forty pounds and pushing and/or pulling loads. Very frequent bending, reaching over head, kneeling, crawling and climbing ladders is required including working at heights up to 150 feet above the ground and on catwalks. The Operating Engineer must have the ability to type including proofreading, attention to detail, monitoring equipment and detailed inspection is required. The Operating Engineer is required to work outdoors during extreme weather conditions with exposure to dirt, grease, slippery surfaces and high and low temperatures. Safety precautions must be observed at all times to ensure safety of self and others.
