The Assistant Controller – Motley Plant will support the Trident plant management team. The selected candidate will be at the center of the Motley Plant’s data conversion and process change in support of an upcoming SAP implementation. 

The Assistant Controller will also provide key analysis and insights to guide decision-making. The individual selected will further support the Motley Controller in driving the plant and warehouse to improve financial performance. The Assistant Controller will support the plant to ensure the financial accounting and reporting objectives are met. The Assistant Controller will support all plant accounting/reporting and complete assigned tasks in a timely and accurate manner and in accordance with Trident policies. 

This position will be located at Trident’s Motley, MN facility and report to the Plant Controller.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides financial decision support to the Motley team to ensure sound financial and operational decisions.
  • Leads the plant cost and inventory data conversion in support of SAP implementation.
    • Owns BOM data conversion to SAP
    • Owns Financial data conversion to SAP
    • Supports routing and recipe conversion to SAP
    • Leads plant training initiatives for R2R and P2P processes. 
  • Provides frequent, accurate and timely operational performance reporting to the plant and company level management teams as assigned by the Plant Controller.
  • Uses analytical techniques and metrics to identify and make recommendations to improve operational performance and lower unit costs.
  • Provides financial support for Lean Manufacturing initiatives at the plant level.
  • Supports the annual business planning process for the plant, including preparation of the financial manufacturing business plan and product standard cost inputs.
  • Participates and/or leads strategic planning initiatives as assigned by the Plant Controller.
  • Assists the Plant Controller with capital planning, including calculating and evaluating financial payback, for all capital expenditure proposals.
  • Works with divisional business units on various initiatives including:
    • Providing cost estimates for innovation and cost reduction projects.
    • Identifying cost/performance improvement opportunities.
  • Exhibits necessary ERP system proficiency for both finance and other plant functions (SAP experience required; JD Edwards experience preferred).
  • Leverages available systems to enhance data access, analytical information, and management reporting.
  • Follows plant safety policies, food safety policies and industry best practices.

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Establishes and monitors accounting controls, including maintenance and review of all Bills of Material.
  • Accumulates and records defined period plant costs. Monitors cost and inventory variances and reports to management for the plant.
  • Ensures the accuracy of monthly closing of books, including preparation of month-end journal entries and maintaining the general ledger. 
  • Performs analysis of all plant costs and variances; prepares plant cost statements.
  • Acquires knowledge of Trident’s Environmental and Safety Policies by completing required training programs and performing designated work activities in accordance with training and procedures/work instructions
  • Notifies designated personnel of any environmental or safety incidents or risks not previously documented, in accordance with Environmental Awareness and/or safety trainings
  • Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.

Minimum Requirements




  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience in Cost and Inventory accounting to include 1+ years of Financial work in a manufacturing location.
  • Food industry experience preferred.
  • SAP Cost & Inventory experience required.  Product standard costing and material ledger experience preferred.
  • Lean Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.


  • B.A. in Accounting and/or Finance or equivalent combination of education and experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • CPA or CMA preferred.

Special Training/Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook 
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and speak effectively before groups of customers, employees and senior management of the organization.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and able to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
