Summary:
This position will manage and direct Tacoma’s Environmental Department by maintaining compliance with all company, local, state, and federal laws and regulations. This position will also oversee facility-wide, non-vessel safety and risk management programs by administering all Tacoma employee workers compensation loss control functions and injury/illness prevention programs.

Key Responsibilities:
• Conducts required environmental observations, tests, and analysis pursuant to company, local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
• Generates environmental reports and maintains permits as per state regulations.
• Works with teams to develop and improve effective environmental strategies to reduce contaminations.
• Investigates environmental incidents and develop action plans.
• Oversees pollution control programs and develop waste treatment and recycling procedures.
• Educates and trains employees on environmental programs and policies.
• Plans and directs training, safety audits, and other safety awareness programs.
• Manages and monitors the performance of assigned teams to ensure they meet required standards and KPI's.
• Interprets rules and regulations in developing a risk assessment of site specific conditions.
• Evaluates and makes recommendations based on the risks and environmental conditions of a site.
• Maintains Trident Seafoods and OSHA mandated safety and health programs including coordinating, facilitating, and/or conducting training.
• Manages the development, implementation, and maintenance of all safety and health programs in compliance with Trident Seafoods and local governing agencies such as OSHA, MPCA, EPA, SARA and DOT.
• Manages, administers, and facilitates workers compensation functions including accident and injury reduction.
• Ensures site leadership and employees are trained and knowledgeable of their responsibilities under policies and procedures.
• Manages and monitors the performance of assigned teams to ensure they meet required standards and KPI’s.
• Maintains loss control data, tracking frequency and severity of accidents and developing safety incentives.
• Works directly with supervisors, physician, nurse, and insurance carrier to coordinate the activities of employees injured on the job.
• Conducts accident investigations, maintains OSHA Log and federally mandated posting requirements. Responsible for monthly and yearly reporting to Corporate Safety Department. 

• Coordinates Plant Emergency Operations activities for plant evacuations and fire drills.
• Manages and directs a return to work and light duty program for injured employees or employees coming off of illnesses.
• Works with HR and local management to resolve personnel and performance issues and determines the appropriate course of action.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.

• Acquires knowledge of Trident’s Environmental and Safety Policies by completing required training programs and performing designated work activities in accordance with training and procedures/work instructions

• Notifies designated personnel of any environmental or safety incidents or risks not previously documented, in accordance with Environmental Awareness and/or safety trainings

Minimum Requirements

 

 

Experience:

• A minimum of 3 years’ safety and environmental experience with increasing responsibility in a industrial environment.

• Successful history of safety and loss control management


Education:
• Bachelor's degree in safety, environmental field, or equivalent experience.
 

Qualifications:
• May be required to possess valid drivers license and/or forklift certification.
• HAZWOPER 8; HAZWOPER 24 preferred


Special Training/Skills:
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software, and presentation software.


Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The Safety/Risk Manager may be exposed to human body fluids, biological agents, laboratory chemicals, or hazardous materials such as asbestos, or carcinogens.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.


Mental Activities: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use teamwork skills and understand English. The employee is frequently required to use decision making skills and speak English. The employee is occasionally required to use interpersonal, customer service mentoring, training and supervision skills. The employee will occasionally be required to read and write English, and use independent judgment, discretion problem analysis. The Safety Manager is required to establish and maintain positive working relationships with other employees, work independently with minimal supervision, and set goals and establish methods for achieving these goals.
