WASTEWATER TREATMENT OPERATOR - AK

SUMMARY

Operates sewage treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment in wastewater (sewage) treatment plant to control flow and processing of sewage by performing the following duties:

Essential Functions

  1. Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage.
  2. Reads PH levels and make appropriate pump adjustments as needed.
  3. Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements.
  4. Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of raw sewage through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
  5. Maintains log of operations and records meter and gauge readings.
  6. Collects sewage sample and conducts laboratory tests.
  7. Oversees and completes water-desludging.

Additional Responsibilities:   

  1. Cross trains in Recycling.
  2. Sanitizes equipment.
  3. Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.
  4. Acquire knowledge of Trident’s Environmental and Safety Policies by completing required training programs and performing designated work activities in accordance with training and procedures/work instructions.
  5. Notify designated personnel of any environmental and safety incidents, or risks not previously documented, in accordance with Environmental Awareness and or Safety training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

One to two years’ experience working with wastewater controls, BDU’s, storm drain maintenance and wastewater recycling.  Must have proven record in chemical compliance with regards to wastewater.

Education:

Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school.  One to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Grade II Certification in Water and Wastewater from the State of Alaska.

Special Training/Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.  To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts.  The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Mental Activities:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, speak, write, and understand English; and to use customer service skills. The employee is frequently required to use interpersonal and teamwork skills. The employee is occasionally required to use independent judgment, discretion, problem analysis, and decision making skills.
