SAFETY MANAGER - SHOREPLANT

SUMMARY

Safety Managers at a shore plant in Alaska will implement and oversee safety objectives, policies, procedures and training programs at assigned location. Oversees all safety and risk management functions including maintaining compliance with all state, federal, and corporate safety and regulations.

Essential Functions

  1. Implements safety-related training programs that drive sustainable, proactive safety conscience behaviors.
  2. Maintains Trident Seafoods and OSHA mandated safety and health programs including coordinating, facilitating and/or conducting training. Administers company safety policies and procedures.
  3. Maintains all safety and health programs in compliance with Trident Seafoods and local governing agencies such as OSHA, MPCA, SARA and DOT.
  4. Maintains Safety Management System (SMS) at assigned facility. Trains Safety Representatives, Leads, Supervisors, Plant management and safety department staff on system requirements, features and functionality. Effectively communicates roles and responsibilities to all system users.  Creates and distributes SMS reports daily, weekly and monthly, as needed.
  5. Ensures that Safety Critical Action Required (SCAR) items are resolved in a timely manner by plant and company management.
  6. Assists with the development and implementation of 5 Down safety training content.
  7. Facilitates workers compensation functions including accident and injury reduction and rood cause analysis.
  8. Maintains loss control data, tracking frequency and severity of accidents and developing safety incentives.
  9. Works directly with production supervisors, physician, nurse, and insurance carrier to coordinate the activities of employees injured on the job.
  10. Conducts accident investigations, maintains OSHA Log and federally mandated posting requirements.  Responsible for monthly reporting to Corporate Safety Department.
  11. Coordinates Plant Emergency Operations activities for plant evacuations and fire drills.

Additional Responsibilities:   

  1. Manages and directs a return to work and light duty program for injured employee.
  2. Works with production and maintenance managers to design and develop ergonomically correct equipment.
  3. Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.
  4. Acquire knowledge of Trident’s Environmental and Safety Policies by completing required training programs and performing designated work activities in accordance with training and procedures/work instructions.
  5. Notify designated personnel of any environmental and safety incidents, or risks not previously documented, in accordance with Environmental Awareness and or Safety training.

Education:

AA degree from a 2 year college or university in safety or related field, or equivalent experience; minimum 3 years experience in industrial manufacturing safety, with a proven track record of successful safety and loss control management.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

May be required to possess valid drivers license and/or forklift certification.

Special Training/Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet, humid and loud conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The Safety/Risk Manager may be exposed to human body fluids, biological agents, laboratory chemicals, or hazardous materials such as asbestos, or carcinogens.

Physical Demands:

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Mental Activities:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use teamwork, training, supervision, independent judgement and decision making skills. The Safety Manager is required to establish and maintain positive working relationships with other employees, work independently with minimal supervision, and set goals and establish methods for achieving these goals.
