Summary:

The Welder I works with arc welding equipment to fabricate or repair structures, machine parts, and plant/shipboard equipment. The employee will be trained and expected to be able to read and interpret drawings, schematics, and sketches; take directions verbally and understand and execute projects.

Essential functions (responsibilities, tasks, supervisory needs)

  • Sets up job site with welding equipment according to standards.
  • Ensures and maintains productivity in workforce by assisting welders as needed.
  • Learns to troubleshoots welding equipment problems.
  • Maintains flow of materials needed on jobs.
  • Introduced to welding and fabrication, schematics, drawings, blueprints, measurements, cleaning workpieces, welding hoses, and cables.
  • Welds structural and non-structural steel and metal parts together using stick welding.
  • Capable of basic parts fitting for welding.
  • Proficient at utilizing measuring devices and cutting materials to specifications.
  • Knowledgeable of proper rigging procedures.
  • Proficient in the use of bandsaws, grinders, needle guns, and basic mechanical skills.
  • Acquires knowledge of Trident’s Environmental and Safety Policies by completing required training programs and performing designated work activities in accordance with training and procedures/work instructions 
  • Notifies designated personnel of any environmental or safety incidents or risks not previously documented, in accordance with Environmental Awareness and/or safety trainings.

Required Qualifications (education, years of experience, KSAs)

  • A minimum of 1 year experience in SMAW or dual shield welding preferred.
  • Must complete a Medical Placement Questionnaire, prior to travel, to ensure clearance to work at remote locations.
  • GED and or High School diploma required.

Preferred education and experience

  • Vessel repairs highly preferred
  • Associate Degree or skilled trades graduate preferred for more experienced positions, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work environment (includes travel/on-call):

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is frequently required to climb or balance.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.

The employee moves objects:

  • regularly up to 10 pounds
  • frequently up to 25 pounds
  • occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. May be required to distinguish shades of color to identify abnormalities and/or defects in food products.

Must be capable of boarding and departing (exiting) a vessel without assistance by moving up or climbing a gangplank, the stern ramp of a vessel and/or a vertical ladder.  Must be capable of boarding/departing the vessel by being lifted in a crane or manlift.  May also enter and exit a skiff from a dock, plane, or a boat unassisted.  Must meet at designated locations to receive instructions and place on a life jacket and an immersion suit without assistance in one minute or less.  Must also move quickly without assistance to any designated lifeboat station.
